Choosing The Perfect Hotel in Kuala Lumpur City

By Thomas Teo

Here are a few tips to consider when finding the perfect place to stay in Kuala Lumpur.

Budget

With prices ranging from the equivalent of a few US dollars for the cheapest dorm bed, to several hundred dollars to stay in the lap of luxury, a good first step is to work out how much you can afford when choosing hotel or serviced apartments. Setting a budget narrows down the options considerably

Location

The most convenient districts for tourists to stay in are Bukit Bintang, Chinatown, Little India, KL City Centre and Kuala Lumpur Sentral. Being close to public transport is another key consideration, particularly for accommodation outside central Kuala Lumpur.

Character

Even within the same price range, different types of accommodation will be available, for example, budget hotels and guesthouses cost much the same. Deciding exactly what you want from your lodging, is a big step towards finding the perfect place to stay.

Reputation

It is always worth checking out reviews and ratings on Tripadvisor, or the major hotel booking websites. Pay particular attention to how places measure up against their major rivals.

Rack Rates

As a general rule, the more luxurious the accommodation, the less likely you are to pay the published rates. A little bit of online research, at least two weeks before your arrival date, can secure some serious bargains.

Guesthouses

Whatever they choose to call themselves, guesthouses, hostels, bed and breakfasts, inns or lodges – they fall under the same broad category. Most have a mix of dorm beds and private rooms, and appeal primarily to independent travelers. They generally have comfortable communal areas and an informal sociable atmosphere.

Budget Hotels

The last few years have seen a massive improvement in the quality and choice of budget hotels in KL. The best of these establishments provide clean, comfortable lodging, at very reasonable prices. They are able to offer this excellent value for money, through high occupancy rates and the lack of ‘frills’-like room service.

Book Ahead

Reserving your accommodation in advance is highly recommended, whatever your budget. At the top end of the market, you will get the keenest prices, while at the lower end, you will not miss out on the most popular places.
